Niagara Falls 2005 - Conquering the Sky
In the summer of 2005, Jay Cochrane returned to Niagara Falls for the greatest skywalking event in North American history.
Each Saturday, leaving from the top of Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort and arriving atop the Skylon Tower, Jay completed the longest and highest skywalk ever performed outside of China.
If that was not enough, Jay performed daily skywalks between the Resort and the Hilton Hotel.
Jay Cochrane holds six World Records for skywalking, outdoor highwire walks between free standing structures or natural wonders. In 1995, he spellbinded the world by skywalking 1,340 feet above the Yangtze River between the canyon walls of Qutang Gorge, almost half a mile apart. Since then, he has mesmerized with walks over Shanghai, Taiwan, Toronto and Tampa - to name a few.
Cochrane, born in Canada, brought the same magic to Niagara Falls, Canada. Beginning June 17, 2005, through Labor Day, with Niagara Falls as his backdrop, Jay skywalked over 20 miles on cables during the eleven-week engagement, featuring the two separate skywalks.
The "Skylon Tower Skywalk" began at a height of 400 feet atop the Niagara Fallsview Casino. Traversing a distance of 1,800 feet, Jay stepped off the wire on top of the Skylon Tower, more than 600 feet high. The longest skywalk in North American history required 50 minutes to complete. Jay's performance was remarkable, set to music as he talked to the crowd below from the wire.
From Sunday through Friday, Jay skywalked a distance of 650 feet between the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort and the Hilton Hotel, 400 feet above the ground, Jay's twice daily skywalks captivated on their own merit. Over the 71 days Jay performed this skywalk, he traveled more than 17 miles and spent almost 3 days in total time on the wire between the hotels. |

Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort hosted the "Jay Cochrane Summer Kick-Off Party" in its main valet entrance area on Fallsview Boulevard.
The invitation-only event featured live entertainment, a barbecue and a unique wirewalking challenge for charity.
Members of the media and local dignitaries had the chance to take a very quick wirewalking lesson from Cochrane before walking a special wire strung close to the ground. The longer the walk,
the more money the casino's Cares Foundation donated to charity.
Over $30,000 was raised for charities including the Tender Wishes Foundation of Niagara Falls, United Way, and others! |
