A Life Above the Crowds

Kaohsiung, Taiwan - A Sixth World Record

jaytaiwan400.jpgJay Cochrane, "The Prince of the Air", set his Sixth World Record as he completed the longest building-to-building skywalk in Kaohsiung, Taiwan on June 29, 2001.

The walk covered a distance of 2,190 feet (over a half mile!) between two forty story buildings on opposite sides of the Love River in Taiwan's second largest city. Jay traversed the distance in 1 hour, 9 minutes.

Brisk winds blew during the walk, making it one of Jay's more difficult walks. The walk had been postponed by a typhoon the week earlier.

"The wind was very strong above the river," said Cochrane. "I had to fight it all the way across the wire."

The walk was featured as a 90-minute TV performance on CCTV, broadcast live to Taiwan, China, Japan and Thailand.

Jay spent nearly a month in Kaohsiung setting up the wire for the walk.

"I really fell in love with the people," Jay said. "They welcomed me with open arms and made me feel right at home."

The wire covered a longer distance than Jay's walk over Qutang Gorge in China. "It was such a challenge setting this up in a major city. I couldn't have done it without the support of everyone in the city," Jay said.
